La Famille Alfonso Caruana - Le dernier des parrains

-The title of Daniel Creusot's historical documentary La Famille (AKA The Family, 2007) bears more than a hint of irony; it refers not to a domestic family but to the infamous Cuntrera-Caruana Sicilian-Canadian crime family, a money-laundering and drug-pushing syndicate that instilled terror into the hearts of Canadian authorities for decades. Though the organization took root in the early 1950s, it grew more dominant and pervasive over the course of thirty years thanks to a slick ability to skirt through the Canadian judicial system and evade detection and incarceration. Now, in this feature length opus, documentarist Creusot uses archival footage to recount the entire sordid tale of the Cuntrera-Caruanas, from the family's inception to its inevitable collapse, as filtered through the brutal life of the godfather, Alfonso Caruana.
